She Did It
Mary Winkler, wife of slain minister Matthew Winkler, has confessed to killing him, police in Selmer, Tennessee, say.
The wife of a minister found dead in the church parsonage has confessed to shooting him and fleeing to Alabama, where she was found the following night with their three young daughters, authorities said Friday.
Mary Winkler told investigators she shot her husband on Wednesday, Selmer Police investigator Roger Rickman said.
Matthew Winkler, the 31-year-old minister at Selmer’s Church of Christ, was found dead Wednesday night in a bedroom of the parsonage after church members went looking for him for the evening service.
Mary Winkler’s father, reached in her hometown of Knoxville, Tenn., declined to comment Friday.
“I don’t have anything to say. I appreciate your interest. I just have nothing to say right now,” Clark Freeman told The Associated Press.
According to the cops, the kids didn’t witness the murder and (at the time of Winkler’s arrest) had no idea their father was dead.

Never Forget Who Pays the Bills
Walter Cronkite is upset because network news programs do public interest stories. He suggests that news producers dump the gardening stories, go with the “really important” news and dump the commercials. That would pose a problem of course, since it’s the commercials that pay for the shows. I can’t fault Walter and his reminiscing the good ‘ol days of TV News like they used to do back in, well, 1960, when news anchors made (relatively) normal size salaries. They just read news back then. Today, they worry about makeup, viewing angle, and maximum on-camera time. Oh, and their multi-million dollar per-month penthouse in Manhattan, their house in the Hamptons, their cottage on Martha’s Vineyard, and the cocktail parties.

You may have heard about a fire that broke out on the set of CNN’s Headline News earlier this week. Drudge reported it briefly, but then removed it from his site. That was all that was known about the emergency. Well, the video is finally available.

French President Jacques Chirac added linguistic patriotism to economic nationalism on Thursday when he briefly walked out of a European Union summit after a French business leader spoke in English.
Facing violent street protests at home over a disputed youth employment law, Chirac stormed out of the room when the head of the EU business lobby, Ernest-Antoine Seilliere, switched from French to what he called “the language of business”.
The incident, confirmed by French officials, came on top of a row over alleged protectionism by Paris, which dominated leaders’ comments at the start of the two-day meeting.
