Walter Chronkite is upset because network news programs do public interest stories. He suggests that news producers dump the gardening stories, go with the “really important” news and dump the commercials. That would pose a problem of course, since it’s the commercials that pay for the shows. I can’t fault Walter and his reminiscing the good ‘ol days of TV News like they used to do back in, well, 1960, when news anchors made (relatively) normal size salaries. They just read news back then. Today, they worry about makeup, viewing angle, and maximum on-camera time. Oh, and their multi-million dollar per-month penthouse in Manhattan, their house in the Hamptons, their cottage on Martha’s Vineyard, and the cocktail parties.
