Crossfire was lousy because Begala is unwatchable, yes, but also because they never bothered to figure out that the audience wants a real debate, not a contrived shouting match more fit for Saturday Night Live skits than prime time, or even late afternoon.

Raising the gavel with a grin, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter opened his first hearing Thursday by allowing more criticism of the Bush administration than his predecessor and by questioning some of the Patriot Act’s police powers.
With his changes, questions and comments, Specter proclaimed his independence and said he expected the same from Alberto Gonzales, President Bush’s nominee to be attorney general.
Didn’t I say that this guy needs to be watched like a hawk? (Sigh) I guess we reap what we sow.
At least tonight I do. They have outdone themselves by putting together a comprehensive online presentation of the Tsunami disaster. Tracking the monster wave and it’s hour by hour destruction, the site adds photos, simulations and provides a lesson on plate movements.

UPDATE: Delay?
While I await Northwest Washington’s first snowfall of the year, Ann Althouse woke up to a foot of the white stuff outside of her place in Madison, WI. Her “cosmic green Beetle” appears to have suffered the most.

Senior Democrats are trying to persuade national Chairman Terry McAuliffe to continue his service as party chairman, especially if none of the current candidates gains momentum in the race to replace him.
McAuliffe met privately Wednesday with several Democratic senators on Capitol Hill, and was asked again to consider serving for another year or two, Democrats say. McAuliffe’s response was not immediately known, but he has been cool to such overtures in the past.
Democratic Party spokesman Jano Cabrera said, “The chairman appreciates being asked to stay, but for now he remains focused on handing over a modernized, mobilized and debt-free Democratic Party.”
This means one of two things:
1. “Senior Democrats” is almost always a code phrase for Bill and Hillary. This could be an attempt by them to keep as many of their “boys” in the fold as possible, what with Ickes withdrawing his candidacy just a day ago.
or
2. This is a Democrat manufactured face saving story meant to provide a way for McAullife to exit the chairmanship gracefully, shielding him from blame for a failed campaign. This would also allow the new chair to stand next to McAullife and shower him with praise for his unselfishness rather than facing a name calling, finger pointing and fight.
Either way, McAullife is gone.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) is considering launching a challenge to Ohio’s electoral votes when the Senate meets tomorrow to certify the votes of the Electoral College.
The challenge — should Boxer decide to offer it — would force a debate in the House and Senate over whether President Bush’s electoral victory will stand. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.) is planning to issue a challenge in the House. Conyers and 23 other House members today outlined their reasons for opposing the certification of Ohio’s electors, claiming there were “numerous, serious election irregularities” in Ohio.
They are so far down a hole, they can’t hear the shouts from above to stop digging. When the Democrats need to choose a representative idiot they always pick Boxer. Hatred has driven these people over the cliff.
