I’m flying back to the US in less than 12 hours and will be offline until sometime Sunday. Be good.

The New UNC Employee
Token job set to keep him in the news up to the 2008 campaign. My bet is he’ll be the first to step foot in New Hampshire.
Cheesy Rage
Dude. He’s only 8 years younger than you.
Update: The boo-boo has been kissed.

Congresswoman Attempts to Redefine the Phrase ‘Occupying Force’:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi’s use of the term “occupying force” to describe the U.S. military presence in Iraq was not a “harsh term,” said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.), who attempted to redefine the terminology.
“I believe that we can, if you will, change “occupying’s” definition to being collaborators — collaborators with the Iraqi people and moving them toward their own self-government,” Jackson Lee told Cybercast News Service on Wednesday night at the U.S. Capitol following President Bush’s State of the Union address.
“So I think it is not a harsh term. We were there occupying, if you will, and we needed to do so for a certain degree, if you believe that the war created the havoc that occurred,” Jackson Lee said.
“I think you can look at the U.S. presence in [Iraq] many different ways; and for large numbers of Iraqi people, despite the democratic elections [on Sunday], we are occupying,” she added.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Chavez: Idiot Dictator
Via James Morrison’s Embassy Row:
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez called Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice illiterate and suggested in a speech last week that she had sexual dreams about him, prompting outrage among Venezuelan women’s groups, which denounced his “obscene and lewd” remarks.
Vulgar little twit.
What The…
Court to Hear Wiccan’s Appeal.
The federal appeals court in Richmond will hear arguments this morning on whether a witch should be allowed to give the opening prayer at Chesterfield County Board of Supervisors meetings.
Cynthia Simpson, a Wiccan priestess who calls herself a witch, was denied a place on the list of religious leaders invited to pray at board meetings because the invocations “are traditionally made to a divinity that is consistent with the Judeo-Christian tradition,” she was told in a letter from the county.
So, just how does a Wiccan prayer start out? Bubble Bubble, Toil and Trouble? Welcome, my little pretties?
What a waste of tax revenue.
Quote of the Day
Stuff like this throws the Left into convulsions…
“Actually it’s quite fun to fight ’em, you know. It’s a hell of a hoot. It’s fun to shoot some people. I’ll be right up front with you, I like brawling. You go into Afghanistan, you got guys who slap women around for five years because they didn’t wear a veil. You know, guys like that ain’t got no manhood left anyway. So it’s a hell of a lot of fun to shoot them.”
— Lt. Gen. James Mattis, A Senior U.S. Marine Corps General
I love the smell of napalm in the morning. It smells like…victory!
Straight From Heaven: The Mute Button
James Taranto says it best…
Why God Gave Us the ‘Mute’ Button
We watched last night’s speech with a mostly right-leaning group of friends, and over their objections we kept the TV on for the Democratic response, for we were really curious as to what Barack Obama was going to say. But as it turned out, the Democrats apparently couldn’t get Obama and instead had to go with the B team of Nancy Reid and Harry Pelosi.
Reid grew up in Searchlight, Nevada, yadda yadda yadda: That’s about all we took away from their speeches, which were soon drowned out by the sound of conversation. Eventually we relented and turned the sound off. We would have read the speeches this morning, but apparently the Dems didn’t think them worth publicizing; we couldn’t find them anywhere on the Democratic National Committee Web site (which does, however, have the eagerly anticipated Terry McAuliffe response, though they don’t know how to spell his name).
Reid and Pelosi do not, to say the least, present an attractive face to America. As our friend Rich Miniter observed, Reid looked like a doctor who refuses to administer painkillers. As for Pelosi–who is known mostly for being more charming than Barbara Boxer–she stiffly stared at the camera with a deer-in-the-headlights look.
We have to wonder what the point is of this tradition of responding to the State of the Union. We don’t mean to pick only on the Democrats; recall the Republican response to the 1995 State of the Union. Even though in 1995 the GOP mattered a lot more than the Dems do today, chances are you remember nothing about their response–and that’s the point: These things are never memorable, and they serve only to make the opposition party look insignificant. If the Dems are smart, they’ll skip the response in 2006.
He’s dead on.
Let The Whining Begin
Leave it to the Democrats to criticize a speech that hasn’t even been given yet. Oh, and do they offer any alternatives? Any new plans? Any changes?
Nope.
Update: Pelosi? Whiner. Reid? Whiner. Kerry? Yep, Whiner. Rangel? Oh yeah, BIG Whiner. Watt? Black Caucus Whiner. And Emanuel? Clintonista Whiner.
