Former U.S. Senator Eugene McCarthy died today, aged 89. Probably best known for an insurgent campaign against President Lyndon B. Johnson for the Democratic nomination during the debate over Vietnam in 1968, McCarthy died in his sleep at an assisted living home in Georgetown.
