PunditGuy

2004 Weblog Awards

So, I head on over to see if PunditGuy is listed in one of the categories…any of the categories…by some miracle. Well, I’m not. Did I really think I was going to be there? No. Did I secretly hope that I was going to be listed there? Yes. Oh well…there’s next year right?

The poll is up, so now is the time to vote.

Ballmer on Blogs

“Blogging is huge,” he said. “It brings together the three biggest Internet trends: communicating, sharing and socializing. It started with e-mail and instant messaging and music sharing, and it’s getting bigger each day.”

Note to Steve Ballmer: Duh.

Dan Rather, the Man

Noonan on Dan Rather:

“People are complicated, careers are complicated, motives are complicated. Dan Rather did some great work on stories that demanded physical courage. He loved the news, and often made it look like the most noble of enterprises. He had guts and fortitude. Those stories he covered that touched on politics were unfortunately and consistently marred by liberal political bias, and in this he was like too many in his profession. But this is changing. The old hegemony has given way. The old dominance is over. Good thing. Great thing. Onward.”

A Class Act

My alliance with Jarvis notwithstanding, tonight’s farewell
by Tom Brokaw was excellent. No schmaltzy crap, just a genuine
thoughtful goodbye. I hope Black Rock Dan watched and took notes.

Microsoft Offers Blogging Tools

Via C|NET:

“Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled a new set of Web-based services
allowing users of its MSN service to publish and track each other’s
blogs.

The new free blogging service, called MSN Spaces, was
launched as a preliminary test service along with newly updated online
software for swapping instant messages and sharing photos, the world’s
largest software maker said.”

I’m not going to jump right out and use this new blogging software just because Microsoft makes it. I just think it is ironic that they continue to be late to the party when it comes to Internet tools.

“MSN Spaces users will be able to customize the layout of their blogs,
post digital pictures, create music and book lists, and also control
who has access to their blogs.”

Gee, just like all of the current blogging tools that are on the market (many of which are free and don’t restrict you to using a single service).

“Using a centralized contacts database that will be shared between
Microsoft’s MSN Hotmail free e-mail and MSN Messenger services, users
will also be able to better track new blog postings, Irving said.”

I’m not a conspiracy freak, but this “MSN Messenger/Hotmail/Passport” dominance thing is getting to be a little too much for me. The less Bill Gates knows about who I’m friends with the better as far as I’m concerned.
